TRIO McNair Scholars Program

McNair Scholars Program

Program Description

The purpose of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (TRIO McNair Scholars Program) is to effectively prepare college students for doctoral study.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded designed to assist first-generation and limited-income students, as well as those students underrepresented in graduate education to:

1) successfully earn baccalaureate degree,

2) enter graduate school, and

3) earn a doctoral degree.

McNair scholars receive services such as GRE preparation, academic counseling, personal development, tutoring and many additional services based on individual scholar needs.  McNair scholars are also able to participate in graduate school campus visits, cultural events and connect with professionals in their areas of interest; likewise, scholars participate in various seminars, additional academic programming, and undergraduate research.

The highlight of the program is the summer research internship.  Each McNair scholar is paired with a faculty mentor to conduct research during the summer.  McNair scholars receive a tuition waiver, free room and board and a research stipend.

McNair scholars also present their research findings at UM’s Undergraduate Research Day as well as a conference in their discipline.
